The Berowra Waters-based 70s houseboat where you can spend the weekend

With a double kayak, paddleboard, private motorboat, and Moët on arrival, this floating retreat is your next must-visit local escape.

In what feels like a scene plucked straight from a romantic 70s film, Oh Buoy is a secluded, off-grid boathouse set amidst the tranquil bush and meandering rivers of Berowra Marina.

Just like the stunning views that surround it, the interior blends unique charm with understated luxury. Every detail has been thoughtfully curated, with second-hand vintage treasures that exude character. A copper dining table sets the tone for sunset dinners, while a cozy orange gingham loveseat invites you to relax and read.

In 2020, inspired by their years on a sailboat, husband-and-wife duo Laurie and Jess Rissman bought a crumbling 1970s houseboat at auction, with a vision of complete transformation.

Every detail of the houseboat tells a story, from the damigiana they brought back from a market in Lecce, Puglia, to Laurie’s favorite “sharkie” timber bottle opener found in an Aussie op shop. Each piece of furniture was carefully chosen by the duo, infusing the houseboat with character and creating a space as unique as their journey.

“We’re treasure hunters at heart,” Jess told the North Shore Lorikeet. “When we travel, we look for items that catch our eye.” Take their Tessa chair, for example—rescued from a street chuckout, then sanded, re-oiled, and given new second-hand leather cushions to make it as good as new.

“One guest even bet their partner we must’ve inherited the boat from our grandparents, given all the knick-knacks. They were shocked when we said, ‘Nope, that’s all us!’ Guess we’re the grandparents now—mid-century mission accomplished!”

Laurie and Jess envisioned the boathouse as a luxurious retreat, with sustainability at the forefront.

“Unlike tiny homes with access to power and water, we had to get creative,” Jess explained. “We rely entirely on solar power—no fuel generators here!” They also collect rainwater, storing it in bladders in the hull.

A day at Oh Buoy begins with the gentle lapping of waves against the houseboat’s sides. From the comfort of your bed, you can pull back the curtains to watch the sunrise, coffee in hand, and perhaps indulge in pancakes with syrup, thoughtfully stocked in the fridge. The only sounds are those of nature—birds calling, frogs croaking, and the family of ducks swimming by. Situated on the Hawkesbury River, on the fringe of Australia’s largest city and surrounded by a dramatic landscape unchanged for thousands of years, this secluded wonderland feels like it’s yours alone.

For those craving adventure, Oh Buoy has it all. Glide across the calm waters on a stand-up paddleboard or explore nearby coves aboard the vibrant orange 1970s motorboat, affectionately named Ginger. The kayak is perfect for discovering the river's hidden corners, while the clear, shallow waters beckon for a refreshing swim.

"Whenever we can, we love to personally greet guests aboard and watch their reactions," the Rissman’s shared. "A few guests have been so overwhelmed by the space that they’ve been brought to tears—there’s something about the nostalgic, timeless feel that really resonates with people.”

Whether you’re savoring a quiet moment with a good book or losing track of time in this serene escape, Oh Buoy offers the perfect island getaway—without ever leaving the mainland.
